Visiting, 1-year Assistant Professor

Department of Computer Science at Eastern Kentucky University has an opening for a one-year visiting position at the Assistant Professor level starting August 15, 2009.  A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field is preferred, but ABD minimally required.  Degree must be from a regionally (SACS, Middle States, North Central, etc.) accredited and recognized international institution. We expect a strong commitment to teaching, service, and continued scholarly activity. The successful candidate will be teaching an array of courses including service, undergraduate and graduate level courses in Computer Science.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Computer Science at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) started its operation on July 3, 2000. However, the Computer Science (CS) program is a mature and well-established program at EKU; it was created in the Department of Mathematical Sciences (now known as Department of Mathematics and Statistics) in 1975. The new department consists of eight tenured faculty (including the chair), one visiting faculty, one lecturer, one laboratory manager, and one administrative assistant.

 

In addition to the regular baccalaureate degree in Computer Science, which was the first program in Kentucky to be accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Board (now known as ABET), the department offers a baccalaureate degree in Computer Science with options in Computer Technology, Interactive Multimedia, Bioinformatics, and Computer Security. Ths department also offers a Master of Science degree in Applied Computing. The MS program is an interdisciplinary graduate program with options in Software Engineering & Computer Security, Business Computing, Industrial Computing, Statistical Computing, and Bioinformatics.

LOCATION

Situated where the Bluegrass meets the foothills of the Appalachians, Richmond is served by a network of major highways, which makes Eastern Kentucky University accessible from all parts of Kentucky and surrounding states. Richmond is 26 miles southeast of Lexington, Kentucky. The metropolitan areas of Cincinnati, 112 miles to the north, Louisville, 110 miles to the west, and Knoxville, 145 miles to the south, are within a convenient drive. Berea, a nationally recognized center for mountain arts and crafts, is 10 miles south of Richmond.

Richmond, the county seat of Madison County, is a progressive, expanding community of approximately 28,000 people and provides an excellent environment for university students, faculty and staff. In and around Richmond are many areas of historic and scenic interest within easy driving distance. The community offers an abundance of services, including quality health care and excellent schools, such as EKU's own Model School.
