The Department of Computer Science at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) started its operation on July 3, 2000. However, the Computer Science (CS) program is a mature and well-established program at EKU; it was created in the Department of Mathematical Sciences (now known as Department of Mathematics and Statistics) in 1975. The new department consists of eight tenured faculty (including the chair), one visiting faculty, one lecturer, one laboratory manager, and one Administrative Assistant.
In addition to the regular baccalaureate degree in Computer Science, which was the first program in Kentucky to be accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Board (now known as ABET), the department offers a baccalaureate degree in Computer Science with option in Technology, and a Master of Science degree in Applied Computing. The MS program is an interdisciplinary graduate program with options in Software Engineering, Business Computing, Industrial Computing, Statistical Computing, and Bioinformatics. An option in Interactive Multimedia and another one in Bioinformatics in the baccalaureate degree are expected to start in spring 2008.
