GRADING POLICY
There will be two mid-term written tests and a comprehensive departmental
final. Also, there will be two “hands-on” lab tests: one on
Word and one on Excel and Access.
Application(Lab) assignments will be given during the semester. These lab assignments will count as one lab test grade at the end of the semester.
Components of the Grade:
Grading Scale:
Lab assignments and 2 lab tests 50%
90-100 A
Tests (two mid-term written) 30%
80-89 B
Final 20%
70-79 C
60-69 D
0-59 F
Standard English usage will be considered in the grading of all assignments and tests. The student must complete the lab portion of CSC 104 in order to receive credit for the class. Grades will not be posted or given out over the telephone.
The midterm grade will be determined by the completed tests and assignments (lab and test components will count equally) at that point. The instructor will provide each student with a printout showing the current grade average prior to the withdrawal deadline.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance will be taken during lecture and lab. Unexcused absences
in excess of 10% of the scheduled lecture/lab meetings will
result in a one letter grade reduction for the course.
Unexcused absences in excess of 20% of the scheduled lecture/lab
meetings will result in a two letter grade reduction for the
course. Unexcused absences in excess of 30%
of the scheduled lecture/lab meetings will
result in a three letter grade reduction for the course. Students with
unusual circumstances should advise the instructor of their situation
immediately. Students will be held responsible for all announcements
made in class.
MAKEUP TESTS:
A makeup test will only be given to those students who have a written
doctor’s or University excuse. Makeup test questions will be
short answer questions. Emergency absences must be discussed
with the instructor, beforehand, if possible. The test must be made
up within one week or a zero will be recorded.
APPLICATION LAB ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments will be given for each lab session and a grade assigned
for each assignment. Assignments will be due no later than
the next lab meeting. A zero will be recorded for all assignments
not received within that time interval. Some assignments will require
a hard copy of a document to be turned in and some will require an electronic(disk)
copy to be turned in. Hence, you must have the two disks
(as required) labeled with your name. You
will turn an assignment in on one disk and have the other disk to work
with while the instructor is grading the disk you turned in.
Also, it will be important that you use the file name specified in an assignment
(your lab instructor will look only for the file names specified in the
assignment).
***NOTE***: ADDITIONAL LAB TIME IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS AND TO SUCCESSFULLY LEARN THE APPLICATIONS. STUDENTS SHOULD EXPECT TO SPEND AT LEAST TWO HOURS ON HOMEWORK OR LAB ASSIGNMENTS FOR EACH HOUR IN LECTURE. A SCHEDULE FOR LABORATORIES AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS TO USE OUTSIDE OF CLASS WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE SECOND WEEK OF CLASSES.
POLICIES:
1. Any student enrolling in a multiple section course for which
s/he has already received a grade of ‘D’, ‘F’, or ‘W’ from the instructor
who is teaching the section may change to a section taught by a different
instructor at no charge by seeing the Chair of the Department of Mathematics,
Statistics, and Computer Science. This change must be completed by
the end of the first Wednesday of classes.
2. The last day to withdraw from a full semester class
is May 22, 1998.
3. Anyone caught cheating in this class will be assigned a grade
of ‘F’ for the course.
